Quick update, Troy has fitted the hood and fenders, and found doors that were not rusted out. They will be getting blasted and coated just like the rest of the car. The rear subframe has been modified. It will be sand blasted and powder coated along with the front flipped crossmember and control arms. Hope to have a update next week. Soon it will be back on the ground with coil overs and big brakes!!! Can't wait!!! Now I need to save for a SR20.....

Always so ling in-between updates, however, not much new here. I have acquired a few odds and ends that I will be installing for several reasons. I plan to put together the car as much as possible, to see what I have and what I need. I also feel that it will assist in keeping some parts safe during transport as I will be moving again.

 

Can someone measure the trunk lock hole spacing for me? I searched but can't find anything. I have a fiberglass trunk and assume it is perfectly centered, but how far up from the bottom of the trunk lid? 

Also for the trunk latch that mounts to the car, they appear to be M5 bolts, are they special or do you just use really large washers on the m5 bolts? 

 

I am trying to fit the side markers and there are some speed clips that go on the fenders, what size should I be looking for? Or if you have links? Also headlight trim is held on with similar clips? Are they the same size?

Thanks, yes I am in the Army. I can't wait to get the engine ordered and all fitted then take apart for paint.

Sorry copy and paste from my 510realm thread.

 

Seeing how I will be going overseas for my job, and the need to transport the 510 once again here in a few months. I decided it was time to enable the hood to latch again. This way I don't have to worry about securing it down with wire or ropes. 

I sourced a lever and latch set. Seeing that I think my replacement front end was from a early 510, the new lower latch didn't fit without cutting. So I didn't want to do that today, so I will use the old lower latch for now. I want to use the newer latch in the future because they updated the part that grabs the upper latch making it more secure.

Here you can see the difference between the old and new style. The new style didn't fit the current radiator support opening due to the more pronounced bump on the left side. Note the different style catch.

And here it is installed. I threw some quick black paint on it I had laying around. Should have sprayed that center steering link too (it was suppose to have been powder coated along with all of the other parts from where the car had been being worked on, didn't notice that along with a lot of missing odds and ends such as my gas tank....)

Any suggestions on removing the seam sealer that is stuck in the adjoining panels. I notice that it retains water, so I need to remove, treat and reseal. Any tips would be cool. Thanks.

I am getting the car ready to transport still. I adjusted the locks so now I can lock the doors, and have installed the front glass. I was surprised that my local glass shop had one available. They said they were too. Only think I have noticed is that the rest of my glass except the passenger door glass (plain clear) is nice blue tint and the windshield is green tinted. I was hoping it would be blue tinted but this is the only glass I could find. You may wonder why I am installing it now. Well I will be moving for my job, and need to transport it next month where it will be subject to the weather along the way. I did this to not only protect the glass while transporting but keep the weather out and the ability to keep the car locked and store my parts inside along the way. She will again sit for a year while I am gone so not much updates. This is the longest build ever, but it is moving forward one small step at a time. My next big purchase for it will be a SR20 and a subie R180 LSD and CV shafts. 


Thoughts on door mirrors? I am leaning toward OEM but they are hard to find.

I like the APR mirrors as they have the blue tint to them and readily available.

Since the time has come to once again move, I have welded a winch mount and added a winch to my car trailer. Later I will make a permanent battery mount and storage box on it. Yes it is a ATV winch, but it is rated for 3000lbs, and ill probably end up using a snatch block.

Since I am overseas, I do not have anything I can really do to my car except order some parts here and there. With this being said I have been on the hunt for OEM mirrors for the left and right side. A set came up on eBay that was exactly what I was looking for. I promptly purchased and likely overpaid, but nevertheless I ended up with these:

I do however find the packaging they came in strange, the boxes have all new logos on it, yet these are supposedly NOS. They do say made in japan on them. My plan is to weld the many holes that were made over the years closed on the door, and spot weld a small backing plate behind them, and insert a rivnut so they can be held on with proper screws instead of a course screw through the sheet metal. 

Next I found out my locks are S30 style so I purchased this from lonelydriver:

Once I get home, I will have all my locks keyed the same as they are all same style, just different keys.

Next I purchased a Subaru R180 diff from a 2006 STI. So from my research this is a CLSD.

Now I just need to order some new axle seals, and will likely source a diff mount from MachinedSpeed as well as the diff cover from him. CV axles will also be purchased sometime soon from datsunrestomods as I like the idea of not having to use any adapters.

Since I am missing a transmission crossmember, I ordered one from Mario at TSR that will have a mount with it for my s15. Hope to purchase the s15 in about 9 months or so. Even though this car is a long way from being finished, it is nice to see it start to come together. Once I get it running, it will all come apart for paint.

I was browsing through some of the pictures that Troy had sent me a couple years ago when the car was at his shop, and I realized I hadn't posted them. It is really nice to see this car has came so far from where it was when I purchased it. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. Anyways hope you enjoy these pictures and thanks for following with me on this build. I hope to have some new goodies soon. Anyways on to the pictures...

 

 

Here is a shot of the rear disc brake and wilwood setup. Notice the powder coated control arm.

Here you can see the rear subframe was powder coated and the rear coilovers from Troy were fitted. (disregard the wheel, my ZX wheels didn't fit well and have since been sold).

Moving on to the front, my cross member was reversed, and all new adjustable steering parts were fitted. Unfortunately the center link was not powder coated and is now rusty. I spoke to Mario at TSR and he said my link will also need to be modified to clear the SR.

I am slowly collecting some new parts. When I saw this steering wheel I fell in love. I don't like the MOMO accordion hub adapter so I got the NRG adapter which I think looks so much better. Word of warning, so when you order the steering wheel, it doesn't come with the metal horn button retaining ring for some reason or any mounting screws, so a quick order from mrsteeringwheel.com was needed. 

Also you can see some lonelydriver parts, the key you saw in the last update, and new for this update is the door lock pulls. They have a cool engraving on the top of them with the broken heart logo. Excited to see what other products they offer.

Small update, the transmission mount arrived at my parents house from Mario at TSR, it looks great! Hopefully once I return from the other side of the world, I can fit all the parts up on the car. Of course it will all come apart for paint afterwards.

This mount is for the S15SR20DET, however I am having a really hard time finding one thats not $5000 or more. Anyone have any recommendations? I think the pandemic has these even more scarce than before.

We'll I finally got around to doing just a small amount of work on the car. Since I was gone from the US for a while, I had the car in storage, I picked it up where I had it in Texas and brought it home to Arizona. This little car has been all over the US, sadly on a trailer. Hopefully one day it will have a journey under its own power. She will have another journey in about 6 months again across the US lol.

Seat brackets back from powder coating along with the trunk springs. 
Question, I have read the posts about installing the springs, but maybe since I have a fiberglass trunk, its way too powerful and lifts the corner up while closed. Or I can install them where it just barely lifts it after unlatching it but won't hold it up. Any advice?

I installed the beautiful diff cover on to my R180 LSD along with some ARP bolts. I repainted the diff with wrinkle black and it turned out better than I thought. 
Don't mind the overspray, I cleaned that of later.

Look at this! I really wish I had inspected the car better before I picked it up, but as its on the bottom, it wouldn't have been easy to spot this. I can't believe I paid thousands for all the work done on this car and to find this kind of work. Makes me sick.

Further, I find out the rear crosmember has the poly bushings installed, but no metal sleeve that goes in the middle, so when I try to torque the nuts, it just bends the large washer. I don't even thing this is the correct washer. Can anyone provide some advice to remedy this? Do I order new and what washer do I get? I have seen some poly bushings that have the recess for the stock style, while these bushings are flat, well bent because they can't seat against the metal sleeve because its not there. Thanks

Can you share the part numbers on the mirrors? 
 

Also I don’t think the 510 keys are the same as a Z. Nissan has a type L and a type R. And the shape of the key cut is opposite from each other. The 510 ignition lock cylinder is on the left-hand side of the column as for the Z is on the right side of the column. So that’s what makes them different

I just checked the box and unfortunately the guy that sold them to me off eBay cut off the part number on the box and wrote LH and RH in its place, SMH. 

 

I have aftermarket locks and it seems to be the Z design for some reason on the doors and trunk. I don't plan on using the lock for the ignition at this time, but to use a push button start in its place.

Seen this the other day and kept it in the back of my mind to investigate.

 

Right side mirror:

96301-N0900 or 96301-10800

Left side mirror:

96302-A5500 or 96302-23101

I think the "N0900" and the "A5500" are the most current #'s but all of them come up as NLA. As far as the packaging goes, that is current packaging for Nissan.

 

While I'm at it....

96321-A5500 inside mirror. Also comes up as NLA from Nissan.

 

96301-N0400 Right fender bullet mirror.

96302-N0400 Left fender bullet mirror. Both of these can be ordered through Nissan Motor Sports.

For almost every Nissan part # and even # at the end of the first group of 5 indicates right hand side, odd indicates left had side...except mirrors. This has driven me nuts for almost 40 years.

 

A little bit of useless information but it may help someone out.
