How to swap a sr20det into a Datsun 510

I know this section is for write-ups only. But Ive looked on here and dont see anything for how to install a sr20det into a 510. I would think someone has already done this many times; could give a few pointers or two. A thorough instructions(w/pics) would be nice too. I know Mckinney Motorsports sells prefab parts sr20det 510 swap, such as manifold, downpipe, downpipe flange, crossmember, but are too expensive. If someone could layout what is necessary for purchase, and what can be worked around, that would also help. Maybe, with all the inputs this could be a useful writeup for this section. Thanks in advance.

First of all....... you need ALL the wiring, ECU, and ALL the sensors........... even when you have that...... you may spend months just wiring depending on your skills

Second: ...... do you have a welder?...... the front crossmember will need to be cut and flipped on a jig.. new motor mounts...... you need to shorten the driveshaft,

custom transmission crossmember/mount,,,, new radiator,,, electric fans,,, KAs use 2 pressurized 5/16" fuel lines 1 return, 1 feed............ electric fuel pump...

custom exaust header, or turbo manifold (with steering box clearance).....custom gas pedal w/ cable linkage......... cut/custom fit intercooler. ...

all intercooler piping measured/bent and cut/welded ...... ... custom air intake pipe to MAF and new smaller air filter... ... or run a mega-squirt???..... better brakes?...... rack n pinion???....... Custom bent exaust........ and you need inlarge the exaust hole in the rear crossmember for any KA/SR ..... .. and maybe a better differential?? ... new bushings??.. brakes?

if not rack and pinion: ...... the stock steering center link needs to be cut and flipped by a proffesional...... or buy a custom center link from MadDat in austrailia:

This again?

Recipe for a KA swap:

Save up $2000 (what my swap cost, not including labor). This should get you a motor and all the parts needed, if your a bargain hunter.

You'll also need some fab skill and a welder.

Oh and you'll need some advance wiring skill also.

Read up, research is key.

After all that your gonna need some time, lot's of time and somewhere nice to work on it.

The last thing you will need is a whole bunch of patience and perserverance. If you come back trying to sell your unfinished swap, I will ridicule and taunt you. :P

Keeping a running motor in there is much easier. ;)

I actually would like to do a SR write-up. It would be really fun but I think since there are so many ways to go with it the write-up wouldn't really help that much. There are to many radiator/intercooler combo's. There are to many headers to clear steering box issues... There is no generic good way IMO.

I think what most people want is mainly a checklist of things to do. And if an individual part is hard to find then a link to where it might be found. Specifics like what part from what car. I know I have seen everything needed by looking though numerous build threads, but I cant remember everything; one consolidated list would be great.

Icehouse, your build thread is inspiring, and you should do a write-up. One thing going into swap that requires more parts and modification, you really want to approach it with some type of a budget in mind. There's all kinds of parts, and prefab swap parts available, but if you go out and buy them all, you would be spending alot of money. I think a good write-up would also help a bunch of ratsun stay with in their low budgets. Thanks

Why don't you read through some of your favorite build threads and take notes on a piece of paper regarding the mods you like, parts you like, shortcuts, etc, etc... You can learn a lot from other peoples mistakes that are already documented on the forum. The info is already here, you just gotta look for it!

Indy510, Thanks for the list of available links. Those will make a good start for someone to do some great reading. I like to read through other guys build threads as well to find ideas and parts needed. The problem is you get other peoples side line stories in the middle of 20 page thread on how they installed their SR/KA/whatever. Reading through all the BS to get the little stuff that really matters is the bitch. Not that it's for nothing, but, it would be nice if someone with the know, on one of their basic swaps, could do a pictorial walk through. Just something as basic as getting the motor sat in correctly, wiring it to the necessary sensors and such.

I would love to do a single cam KA in my wagon. Simple, more power and mpg. It's just the wiring that scares the hell out of me. I HATE WIRING!!

Lesson 1. if you dont, you WILL repeat them.

take video/pics so others will learn

Lesson 2. its not a cheap swap.

cheap swaps are not good, good swaps are not cheap.
