datzenmike
'77 was the first year for the 5 speed in the 620 and 280z. The '77 and '78 truck trannys were identical for gearing but the '79 was a wider ratio. Also the '77-'79 280z car 5 speeds were the same as the '77-'78 truck tranny so they will fit as well. The '80-'83 280zx non turbo 5 speed will also work but they do have a very high 5th over drive and the L16 may struggle to use it on the highway. Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Derek id hit up the yards. Tons of Z cars w/ 5 speeds no matter where you go. I swapped in a 5 speed out of a 83 into my 521 [L 16],,required a few mods but was well worth it. Link to comment
Z-train
also the '77-'79 280z car 5 speeds were the same as the '77-'78 truck tranny so they will fit as well. Mike-1st gear is the same in the truck & Z boxes? Link to comment
datzenmike
The '77 and '78 truck tranny gears (all forward and reverse) are the same as the '77-'79 z and zx. From '80 on they are closer ratios. The '79 truck used a much lower first because that year standard used a lower 4.11 ratio differential. I also forgot to mention the '79-'84 810/Maxima also used the same '77-'78 truck 5 speed gears, and why not the Maxima was built on the 280z/zx platform anyway. Link to comment
