The vacuum switch on the thermostat housing does not or should not be connected to the vacuum advance on the dizzy. If you have the stock Hitachi carb, there are two vacuum supply ports on the valve cover side of it.

The front one goes to a 'T' with one line to the distributor advance, and the other to the charcoal cannister, a totally benign addition to the overall smog system, that has no effect on performance. Check that all hoses are tight and not leaking.

The second vacuum port, more to the rear of the carb should connect to the funky switch doo-hickey on the thermostat housing and from there, (on the '75-'77s) to the EGR valve. Check that all hoses are tight and not leaking. If you just can't run with the EGR, at least disconnect it properly so as to not cause yourself problems later. Pull the hose of the REAR vacuum port on the carb and plug the port. That's it.
