datzenmike
Well yesterday on a tip from a Realm member I managed to get a clutch and brake pedal as well as some 'extras'. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710parts003Large-1.jpg[/img]"] Got my missing grill emblem: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710parts003Large.jpg[/img]"] One of my rear side markers was broken and replaced with red plastic... not a bad job actually but I got replacements and these stock? wipers to replace the ugly Canadian Tire plastic ones: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710parts001Large.jpg[/img]"] I cut about 8 feet of the top of our rotten plum tree so that if it blows over this winter it won't hit the car. I then loosened the lugs and raised the rear up off the ground and removed the wheels. H-165-B with leaf springs: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin007Large.jpg[/img]"] http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin001Large.jpg[/img]"] Next thing is to get the front up on stands also. This will keep it drier underneath and I can work on it without bending over as much. Edited December 29, 2009 by datzenmike Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Well I now have the front end elevated and wheels off and stored. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin028Large.jpg[/img]"] Still has the spring to hold the flex hoses up! http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin008Large-2-1.jpg[/img]"] ...and the angled pads. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin009Large.jpg[/img]"] Found out I have an elephant oil cap!!! http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin014Large.jpg[/img]"] Has this name on the resonator and muffler. If this is the factory is it possible it's 35 years old??? Could be a dealer replacement part? Odometer shows 23,138 miles so it's either right, or 123,138. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin021Large.jpg[/img]"] Quote Link to comment

Does anyone know if the Maxima strut will fit??? http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/My%2074%20710/710projectbegin029Large-1.jpg[/img]"] Quote Link to comment
Jason
I think the Maxima strut will work Mike. Depends on the ride height you want also. Pull one out and try the Maxima strut in there! Look at the top of the stock strut too, is there a offset top hat to correct camber? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No camber plates. But I have a '76 710 goon in town that does. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Datsun%20car%20trucks/710stuff013Large.jpg[/img]"] Wow enough for today. I will pull one out and try it. I don't suppose the Maxima hub/rotor/caliper will just pop onto the 710 spindle??? Edited December 30, 2009 by datzenmike Quote Link to comment
Jason
You know Mike, I've been told that the 610/710 struts have the larger spindle common to later Nissan models, I believe I have 610 struts in the black 'goon with GIANT rotors on them so this may be true. Give it a try and see, won't hurt anything right? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Easier too. The Maxima was built on the 280zx platform and although the vented rotors and calipers aren't an exact match they are very similar in size. The boots are still un-torn in these 710 struts too. Isn't there a way to replace the shock oil? The Maxima springs would be stiffer too? Edited December 30, 2009 by datzenmike Quote Link to comment

Isn't there a way to replace the shock oil? The Maxima springs would be stiffer too? If the Maxima strut has the original OE oil damper still in it, it's an easy re furbishment Mike. Take the top hat off and then remove the strut nut. Have a look down the tube, if there is an "O" ring around the top of the assembly, then it's probably the OE damper. To remove it, get a small, fine dental pick and gently remove the "O" ring, if you don't puncture or tear it in removal, you can re use it. Get a big basin of some sort and gently remove the damper assembly, don't let any of the valve parts fall off the bottom or you're gonna have to figure out the order and orientation of re assembly, not fun, I had to figure one out before. Place the damper assembly into the basin and let stand and drain of all old oil. Pour the rest of the oil in the strut tube out and you can spray it with a little brake clean and wipe out any gunk on the bottom of need be. Refill with your choice of Motorcycle fork oil (for it's anti foaming agents) I used 20W on my Nissan Euro springs and 30W on my Specialty "autocross" springs. I don't know the refill capacity of the OE Maxima assembly, you're gonna have to look that one up, I do have the 510 ones around though. Be careful not to overfill! Reassemble and you're good to go. Total cost is about $18 for the fork oil! Yeah, Ratsun! With the brakes, I'd imagine that the real problem would be the calipers, not the rotors! You might have to make up a new mount for the Maxima stuff. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
To do this the springs would need to be compressed and removed right??? Thicker oil = more damping? Quote Link to comment
Guest 510kamikazifreak
Yup have to take the springs out Mike,And yup the damper While your at it cut the springs too :hyper: Quote Link to comment
Jason
Yup have to take the springs out Mike,And yup the damper While your at it cut the springs too :hyper: Yep, remove springs first, (I forgot that step  ) and do the rest. The thicker oil helps with the damping, however, with the Specialty autocross springs the damping ceases to be adequate at speeds greater than 85-90mph, don't ask how I know  ! As Lou says, you can cut the springs, however, I'd rather lower the spring perch by making it adjustable height with a muffler clamp. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
What was changed? My '74 710 A neighbors '76 710 goon. Why were camber plates added? Was the strut changed for a newer larger style? One thing is for sure a totally different front coil was used for the '76 year than all previous years. It even says in the listing "for camber adjustment" , so is it smaller diameter so it can move around in the strut tower. Anyone Know??? Quote Link to comment

If I remember this correctly, Datsun had a problem with camber on the 710 and did a tophat with offset for refitting to the strut. I read that somewhere, but, darned if I know where .... Guest 510kamikazifreak
The camber plates are moog old school ones from late 70s to early 80s, The top hat was offset on the 710 for the camber issue, Alot 510 guys used 710 upper hats on lowered 510s gave "some" camber correction.
