80 z20s dist

i bought an 80 510 wgn with a z20s W/automatic.They have a 4 plug lead cap on dist.,thus nothing going to ex side of motor.will a 4 lead cap fit on a 8 plug dist.,or have they put an L series dist. in my z 20s motor?thanks for looking...>:}

A 1980 non-california Z20 came stock with the 4-plug distributor. Does it have unconnected spark plugs on the exhaust side? If so, I'd suspect the HEAD got changed, as 1980, non-california Z20s only had the 4 plugs.

 

The 4 and 8 plug distributors are completely different. The 8-plug one is massive.

Its not the stock motor,(jy replacement)and yes non used plugs on ex. side.so they put an l series dist.in it im guessing(Idiots everywhere)

L-series dist wouldn't fit, bases are different. They used the original 1980 dist because your car doesn't have the wiring for the 8-plug setup (8-plug uses 2 coils and 2 sets of trigger wires).

I suppose you could get blanks to fill the unused plug holes. It's not really effecting anything having "dead" plugs in the exhaust side, though you need to set the timing per the 1980 specs and not the '81 specs if running only 4 plugs (the ignition timing is different).

Just run it the way it is. Besides all '80 California Z engines, these all have the 8 plug dizzy and coils: '81 A10, '81-'83 200sx, '81-'82.5 720. Keep an eye out for one of these dizzys and the matching coils for cheap and swap in at a later date.

Definitely the Z20 and Z22, probably the Z24 but not positive on this.
