littlejason
I took a trip to Mexico... shoot... like 20 years ago, my #1 memory is "why are there so many Datsun 710s around here??" I didn't even know they were made in Mexico! Quote Link to comment
Jesse C.
Now hold on a cotton pickin' minute! A few years back a few of us used to run down to Tijuana and go eat tacos down there. While on such a trip we ran across a Mexican 510 with a solid rear axle that was a TWO DOOR! We promptly took chase to check it out! We tried making the driver pull over but he just kept on driving and he went into a pretty rough part of town, as in bad roads and not people, when we stopped following him. From what we saw, there are solid axle 2 doors down there. I would really like to see proof to the contrary. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Hard to prove a negative... but everything I've seen said that they didn't have 2-door sedans in Mexico or anywhere in Central/S America. In fact 2-door Sedans were kind of a US-market thing, though they were sold elsewhere. Not saying they don't exist, but until the info I see gets disproven with solid evidence to the contrary... I never saw any Datsuns in TJ. Then again, I was looking out for my own hide trying not to get mugged. Finally decided enough was enough, my buddies escorted me back to the border, I caught the Trolley back to SanDog. They went back into TJ... and got mugged. Quote Link to comment

Well, about ten of us saw the thing and it had a solid axle rear. Wether it was originally built in Mexico or not I don't know but it was a two door with a solid axle and had Datsun 1300 emblems on it. The tail lights where non-U.S. types. I will ask my friends who where with me to double check me and who knows, I might be wrong, but until then, it was a two door to me! As for getting mugged in Tijuana, what where you up to that put you in that position? I am not saying TJ is a totally safe place, but then again, some folks go down there and act totally wild and get themselves into deep shit on their own account. Quote Link to comment

I wasn't doing anything except being a part of a group of obviously US Navy sailors walking around TJ. The problem was my buddies were looking to get drunk, and had already downed a few and as such were slowly getting less aware of their situation. Since they all decided to get well plastered on cheap Mexican spirits, and me being a teetotaller I figured the last thing I wanted to be was in a group of drunk sailors in the streets of TJ. Besides, one of them was Mexican-born and spoke fluent Spanish. I didn't want to rain on their good time, and it wasn't like I was leaving anyone alone; there were 3 of 'em. As it was, they never made it to another bar as they got mugged walking back from the border gate after dropping me off. They straggled back to the ship 2 hours after I got back minus their wallets and hats. I went to TJ twice. I was unimpressed. As for the car, I completely forgot that SSS bluebirds could be found in Guatemala. So it's quite possible it got brought "North". Quote Link to comment

Well, I hate to say it, but, the worst place to hang around after dark is at the border itself. Those pedestrian bridges are scumbag hideouts at night and they will mug you for just a smile! Walking around there at night you have to keep your guard up and keep moving! TJ is not the same place is used to be a few years ago and that is truly sad. It was once really fun. I have not been down there in well over 7yrs and I grew up there as a kid! Born in L.A. and raised in TJ! I am ready for anything!! Bummer you did not have good time and thank you for your service to our country. Next time you come down this way let me know and I'll buy you a brew! On this side of the border!!!!! As for the 510, I do remember that it did not have Baja plates and I can not remember the state they where from. The car was a shitty dark brown with a vinyl top and the rest was mud!! Quote Link to comment
