woodside4032
Is there a way to distinguish what type of vehicle my engine came from. There are markings by the dipstick, [Nissan Japan U95]. Numbers below by the starter, [89074]. Markings on the head, [u67]. I want to change my clutch and possibly switch to a lighter flywheel so wouldn't it benefit me too know if my engine came from a truck or a car. Any recommendations for clutch and flywheel sources and types. As always any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you Kevin Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
U-67 is a pre '78 truck or car L20B head. Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
nissan engines, from l20b to ka24 all had 6bolt flywheels, just depends in you want 200mm, 225mm, or 240mm clutch... 225mm is a good compromise. the 280z and zx came with these. Fidanza makes a real nice lightened flywheel with a replaceable friction surface (many are not replaceable and non turnable). The stock replacement 280z Daiken/Exedy clutch has plenty of grip for even a pumped up L20b, if a turbo is in mind maybe something more aggressive. 1 Quote Link to comment
Braden
in what years and or cars did they make the u60 head and block? ive heard these are fairly rare Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
The U60 head is very rare, though functionally identical to a U67 head so it's not like it's anything desireable unless you're collecting heads. It was only used in the 1974 L20Bs AFAIK, and I've never seen one in it's original environment. There may have been a known flaw in the casting that made Nissan change it early, or it was a prototype. The U60 BLOCK lasted as bit longer, and was co-produced with the U67 as there's virually nothing different. If you open nearly any L20B engine the CRANK is U60, even through '79, though there is another L20B crank casting. To answer the original question, it'd almost impossible to tell where a replaced engine came from. Some engines are identifyable, but not that early. A '78-79 L20B from a car has a different dipstick location, but it wouldn't be a U67 casting. The only way to know what flywheel/clutch to get it to open it up and look, because it's gonna be either a 200mm or a 225mm. Quote Link to comment
