Bugeye
I have searched, and searched and haven't found a straight answer on this. Is there any gain in boring the L20 to 86mm to use 280z pistons? I already have my engine sitting in the hot tank. Im not looking to build a High HP engine, just something reliable. The head I am using is a closed chamber a87 with the L20 cam. Another thing is what would be the difference between the flat top pistons from the later model zx and the dished pistons from the early zx or standard 280? Or should I just replace the stock L20 dished pistons (2 of mine are chipped) and please don't tell me to swap in a ka it's not the style of build I am going for on the 521 any and all input is welcome Thanks Donnie Edited August 19, 2009 by Bugeye Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Silvolite makes pistons or used to . flattops are to much for the street and you want to run cheap gas. get the 280zx dished piston if you have to go to 86mm but see if Rockauto.com has L20 pistons and then run a closed chamber head. W53 or closed A87(ck as there are open ones) http://kb-silvolite.com/spistons.php?action=Mfg4ci&mfg=Nissan&Div=Nissan&ci=119 call them as they will give a distributor. I paid 76 $ shopped maybe 5 years ago. Thats if they are still around. if not try the 280zx stuff Quote Link to comment
hang_510
there is no replacement for displacement (even if its small) if your going over w/stock pistons, go big! :D keep an eye on the CR if you decide to use the flattops! Quote Link to comment

HRH
Or you can just get a new set of pistons, run an easy to find open chamber head, cut .060 off two shims per tower, and call it good. Should be a mid 9 compression ratio which can still use 87 octane no problem. That's probably your cheapest option. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
L20B bored 1mm over would make a 1,997cc motor. Above with 1mm over L20B pistons and closed chamber head........ 9.066 comp.
