zed
My L18 is running about 35F / 10C hotter since I raised the compression. Summer is coming - so, I fitted an oil cooler. This has fixed the heat problem - but, dropped oil pressure from 4 bars to 3. Honsowetz says you can increase oil pressure by fitting a stronger spring or shims to the oil pump relief valve. Can anyone explain how this is done? Sounds too easy. But it would be a whole lot cheaper than buying a smaller oil cooler. Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
what pump are you running now? Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
280zx turbo oil pump or a KA oil pump but dont know if they have them in ZA Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Can't see how an oil cooler will drop pressure, ... but. Yes throw that L18 pump away and get one from any KA24E single cam motor in the 240sx, KA24E or KA24DE from the D-21 Hardbody truck, or '86-'90 D-21 with the Z24i motor. All have the high output oil pump with 14% longer rotors in them. My 300,000km L20B had a hot idle pressure of 17 lbs. With no other change but the pump, it jumped to 29 lb. This is a very good modification to ANY L or Z series motor. Increasing the spring pressure is not the way to go if you do not have the volume to back it up. Quote Link to comment
zed
Well, for what it's worth, the spring mod works. Last night I put a longer spring in the valve - hot idle is back to 2 bars, and 4 bars at 2000rpm. Got a price of a new KA 24E pump here: R2550 = US$340! Will look for a KA pump in the scrapyards next time I'm in the city. Problem is, Nissan parts are real hard to find in scrapyards here. Probably because people are poorer, can't afford new vehicles.
