dat521gatherer
http://www.the620.com/620tech.htm look at the L series specs and mods for more L series options. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I dont know as I have no experienge with either. I do know that the LZ2.2 seems to be the popular mod favored over the 2.4. I think I read somewhere that the 2.4 is prone to cracking? I guess it all boils down to how much modding you want to do to make it work. Dont forget that unless you have them already your looking at $500 or so for carberators. As far as HP # its up to the ampunt of work you put into the internals. A "well" prepped and tuned L20b will out perform a pieced together LZ2.4 any day. I recently went driving with a group of Datsun guys. 2 SR powered wagons, 1 FJ powered wagon, and a longrod 2.3 L motor powered Bluebird. The 2.3 smoked EVERYBODY even though it was 30 year old technology. If I was doing an L/Z frankenmotor, I would definitely go LZ22. Just get a Z22 and put an L head, timing chain & cover and oil pan on it... good to go. Basically you are making a 10% larger L20B motor, so a proportional increase in torque and HP. An LZ24 would have a 20% increase in power. Fineline, if both the L20B and the LZ24 were equally 'prepped' I would have to go with the LZ24. The L20B would be 'in the hole' by 20HP to start. The L head would improve the Z24 motor's breathing, making it a larger L20B... displacement, displacement, displacement. Quote Link to comment
Fineline
Your right. Dont know what I was thinking! Quote Link to comment
Jester
521 gatherer, awesome link man. I book marked that one. I almost forgot I was logged in here. Tons of info. Thanks Jester Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Your right. Dont know what I was thinking! I think you meant the well tuned L20B would beat a Z24? This would be an interesting race for sure. The Z24 has tons more stock torque, but the L20B has a hair more power at RPMs. Hmmm I've driven a Z24i and it was amazing the bottom end pull it had! I'll bet it would leave the L motor and pull ahead. Maybe far enough that the L couldn't catch up in time. Quote Link to comment
Fineline
Well after thinking about it last night I think we are both right. Your right about there being "no replacement for displacement"..........but the great equalizer is boost. We could sit here and contemplate the great unanswered question of which engine is greater but realistically theres much more to it than that. I guess it all boils down to again what he wants to do with it?:) Quote Link to comment
69FJWagon
forget about FJ's...dont get me wrong I have 2 of them and I love em but the cost to build one is way to much my wagons FJ is carbed and I have more money into it than I want to say...best bet would be a long rod LZ 2.3 for an all around motor with carb's if you want to go injected I would say KA 12 valve or 16 valve either of them are great motors the SR non turbo is also a great motor and you could pick one up from DGR fab for under $2000 with tranny Quote Link to comment
