dozenhundred
I found out that the reason why the coupe I just bought rode so stiff in the rear. The rear shocks only had about a half inch of up travel until they are fully extended. I can get some Gabrial Classics from autozone pretty cheap, but wondered what others liked. I have seen Koni's for like 150, but are they worth the cost of admission? This is just a daily driver. Any suggestions appreciated. Edited August 25, 2009 by datzenmike Quote Link to comment
OpelWagenGT
unless your going to "slam" the car or autocross it you don't need to waste your time with konis. The Idea with them is you can get adjustable dampening but this is really only good for racing situations. As far as cheap shocks i've never used gabriel but I know kyb's are decent if you can get some. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
By far the best shock for a daily driver is the original equipment KYB, they are the smoothest and prevent the back from leaving the ground. Some background is here: 1200 tech: Shocks Does your coupe have the wrong shocks, or is it simply lowered too far down? Quote Link to comment
littlejason
I'm using KYB gas-a-just for the FRONT of a VW bug. I tried, but I couldn't remember how I cross-referenced that. So you're gonna have to take my word for it. They were like $1.50 each or something at U-pull it. Kinda hard to find bugs nowadays, though. Quote Link to comment

That's good to know. I have KYB's for my sedan when I get around to putting the factory rear axle and springs back in it. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Just be sure to get the KYB for 1200 (the plain black ones), not for B210 or newer ones like KYB Gas-a-just. Quote Link to comment

I've had the rear axle totally refurished and ready to go for months, (I got the OEM bushes months ago, too) and I'm just now starting to clean up the leafsprings. I'm not breaking any records for a rear axle install :) Quote Link to comment
DRIVEN
I bought the cheapest plain-box, non-gas shocks Baxter's had. They were, like, $15 each. Still rides pretty rough. Quote Link to comment
dozenhundred
Thanks to all who replyed. I bought some KYB GR2's. They are much better. The car is lowered with a 1" block, but that doesn't affect the shock length. These shocks are for the front of a 70 or so type I bug. Quote Link to comment
mazdat
Hey Kelly, I'm able to get you the KYB GR 2's for a 1200 coupe, did you already installed the bug ones already? Quote Link to comment
dozenhundred
Yeah I did. They are supposedly the same part number for the coupe and bug. They are much better than the shocks that were on it. Thanks Quote Link to comment
