5casey1dimer0
In my dime i have a L16 with a 3 speed auto transmission. The plan was to leave it that way, but a friend of mine has had a newer model 510 for a long time, um... i think they call them stanza's? Any way he isn't into datsuns and it is just a car to him. He said i can have his car if i want and i was thinking i could pull his dogleg five speed out of it, i know it will mate up to my motor, i was just wondering if i would be fine with my drive line, I dont know if it would need to be shortened or not. also, i should be fine using the clutch master cylinder from his car as well correct? Thanks in advance:) oh yeah anything else i might be forgetting? thanks! Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
Does it have and L motor or Z motor? Quote Link to comment
5casey1dimer0
Does it have and L motor or Z motor? My 510 has an L, actually, you've driven my dime lol, and his has an L20. Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
ok, so if the car you want to get the tranny from IS L20, than your good, it should bolt right up... but you will have to cut up that pretty floor of yours... I never did auto to manual in a 510... but I did just do one in my Z and everything bolted up perfect except making the hole in the floor a little longer, and that section was already stamped into the floor so the cut was simple... Cool thanks. Trans mounts are fine how they are? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
lol nothing is that easy. :D Pretty sure you will have to mod the 510 rear tranny mount location slightly to fit the FS5W63 dogleg. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
The mount point is not quite in the same place, so it does require some mods. Quote Link to comment
5casey1dimer0
well i think ill slap the trany on the motor, throw it back in the car, and see what i need to do with the mounts! im sure ill be on here soon asking what i should do next haha Quote Link to comment
Guest DatsuNoob
Hey Hey! Another Puyallupian! Welcome. I think I've seen you driving around on 94th before. A trans mount will be eeeasy azz if you have a chunk of angle iron, a bit of flat stock and a welder. Dont let anyone tell you different, go for it! Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
if you need help... you know I'm close! :D Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The dogleg should fit but you will need an L16/18 flywheel and install a pilot bushing in the end of the crank. Doubt if the pedles will 'drop in' but you can make them work I guess. The clutch master and slave will work. Lengthwise both trannys are close enough. Quote Link to comment
LenRobertson
As datzenmike said, the L20 flywheel from his car won't bolt up to your L16 crankshaft (L20 uses 6 bolts, L16/18 uses 5 bolts). You need a 5 bolt hole flywheel and clutch to fit it, or if his L20 isn't a real oil burner, swap it into your car, along with the tranny. 400 more ccs. More power, more speed. Well maybe, depending on condition of the L20. If you stick with your L16, and find a 5 bolt flywheel, you may need to change the sheet metal spacer between the block and flywheel (or not). Does anyone remember if this is different for auto or manual trannys? One of the pedal hanger bolts on a 510 is backwards threads, at least on my '72. I'm pretty sure it is the brake pedal bolt. So one of the bolts the pedals pivot on must be turned clockwise to loosen it. If you don't know this, you can twist off the bolt. I don't know if the newer 510 pedals bolt into older 510s. If not, you may need a pedal set to fit your car. You need the hard line from the clutch master cylinder that runs across the firewall down to the clutch slave cylinder. I don't know if this is the same length on the two cars, but maybe close enough to work. The auto trans has a neutral safety switch. When you unplug this, you need to make a jumper wire to stick into it, otherwise your ignition circuit will be dead. Probably a couple of other things you need to do that I'm not remembering, but it is all little stuff. Nothing you can't handle. Len Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
I may have an L16 flywheel here somewhere... Quote Link to comment

Does anyone remember if this is different for auto or manual trannys? you need to remove the spacer completely. It doesn't fit with a flywheel. Quote Link to comment
