whitechef
Hi guys, I just landed a job in Wyoming. The problem is it's 1250 miles. What do I need to do to my old 521 to make it? It's got an L20B that smokes and it's got a little valve train noise. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Quote Link to comment

herculesinwyoming
where are you moving to in wyoming, this is a great state to live in. One of the few states that had a budget surplus for many years. Quote Link to comment
72240z
Idk why people brag about the surplus, When a state is the largest coal producer but has the 2nd lowest population density in the country it would take a lot to screw things up. I'm sure it's a nice place to live though, esp if you prefer nature over people, or dislike rain greatly. I agree with the uhaul suggestion, the cost vs risk is a win on that one. ggzilla
an L20B that smokes and it's got a little valve train noise 1. Adjust the valves to spec 2. Bring a case of oil As long as it's not so much smoke as to ge a ticket, I think you'll make it. Quote Link to comment

yellowdatsun
I've been all over Wyoming for work. Not a lot to do, but some of the nicest people in the country. Saw a couple model A Fords driving across the state on my last visit. So if they can make it, you'll be fine. Your already bringing your tools, so just take a few gallons of water/antifreeze, maybe a belt and hose, you should be all set. Just because your motor smokes a bit doesn't mean it's about to give up on you. I'd probably try to get rid of the valvetrain noise though bu adjusting them. Quote Link to comment
DRIVEN
As long as you keep oil and coolant in it you shouldn't have a problem. Might not hurt to do a valve adjust. Just remember that those old trucks weren't made to drive as fast as new cars. Take your time and pop the hood at gas stops. Good luck. Quote Link to comment
oregondime
i say dont risk it. just uhaul it.. i have a family member that works for Budget and i got a full size car trailer for 1 penny. literally.. just work your ratsun magic, you might get a few free days or something at least. its not like its california, oregon or washington, you break down there isnt that many places to tow it in. if you trust the motor go for it.. ggzilla
Those old trucks were designed back when the speed limit was 75 mph...they can do 55 mph all day long, Nissan engineers made sure the US models could do that. Oil smoke won't cause the engine to break, instead be worried about lack of smoke which means you ran out of oil :-) Is it blue smoke (oil) or black smoke (unburned gas) or white smoke (leaking head gasket)? Jester
You have been given some good advise if you choose to drive it. 1) ADJUST THE VALVES FIRST!!! 2) Keep the essentials like water and oil on hand with the tools. 3) Check the oil and water at each fill up. You will be ready for a break by that time anyway. One thing I would advise as well is to make sure you have a good spare and the right tools to change a flat. If not, go with Kiz's idea and just stick it in the front of a Uhaul and pack around it. BTW, Congrats on the new job. Quote Link to comment

whitechef
OK guys, I,m going to town today to pickup antifreeze, Bardahl no smoke, a gallon og 20/50 and a spare tire then I,m leaving in the wee hours of the morning. Thanks for all of your good advice. I only have to run about 150 miles on at freeway speed so I think it will be alright, I'll stay in the right lane with the old folks. Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
Good luck on the new job. Advantages of Wyoming, good people, no state income tax, wide open spaces and if you are a hunter Elk to the East of Jackson Hole, Antelope everywhere, and to the South in Slaughter House Gulch the biggest Mule Deer you can find anywhere.
