a.d._510_n_ok
Does it really matter what weight oil you refill the strut housings with? I've got some 80w gear oil and I'm leaning towards using it. Anyone got a preference and if so why? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Thicker would be stiffer. Jason, (http://forum.ratsun.net/member.php?u=7) used ATF in his goon I believe. Edited July 1, 2009 by datzenmike Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
80W I imagine would be too thick to work with the precision McPherson Strut valving. Stock oil was thin, I think 10W. Even 30W is thicker than ATF. Quote Link to comment

tlap
Maybe I am missing something here, and please let me know if I am, but how does the oil in the strut tube housing effect dampening? Doesn't the strut/shock do the dampening? not the oil around it? Quote Link to comment
hughdogz
^^^ I thought it was for promoting better heat transfer to the housing. Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
^^^ I thought it was for promoting better heat transfer to the housing. exactly. He didn't specify if he was rebuilding his struts, or replacing them with inserts. If he's rebuilding them, the oil weight matters greatly!!! But, I seriously doubt that's what he's doing. If he's simply putting struts in, you can put some of the same oil you poured out of the strut, or pretty much any oil. I use motor oil sometimes. ......and if he is changing the oil in the stock strut assy......where's the pics and the how to?!! :) Quote Link to comment
Jason
For close to stock damping in the OE oil dampers I used a 20W motorcycle fork oil, non foaming. For the 250lb springs in the 'goon I used a 30W motorcycle fork oil, I would have used something thicker, but, that was the heaviest weight I could order locally. I'll take pictures of when I do my next set of struts, seems to work fine .... Quote Link to comment

I went with ATF this morning. Seemed just a teeny bit thinner than what little of the old stuff poured out but it was pretty danged close. Quote Link to comment
