datsun dreamer
Not realy sure what you would call this......So im driving to a stop sign..Downshifting and i'm holding the clutch as i am approaching the stop and i notice a small cloud of blue smoke! I start to drive and it goes away(or i cant see anything!) Truck doesn't over heat and drives as normal(but does leak oil!) Should i not be concerned or is it a sign of something about to happen! any info. greatly appreciated, Thanks,Jason. Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Ok, did the smoke come out of the tailpipe or from the engine bay? If it's leaking maybe some oil got onto something hot & thats what you saw ! ? Id do a compression test & go from there. Harbor freight sells the testers for about $12. Quote Link to comment
datsun dreamer
Hey mark, The smoke came from the tailpipe and it was blue I'll have the compression checked....Does not seem to be losing power though! Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
It MAY be the rings going bad. How many miles on the engine? Remove the spark plugs & see what color they are...thats a good way to tell whats going on inside the engine. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Depending on how hard you were breaking to a stop it is possible to force the oil in the pan up to the front. If the crank was spinning fast like during a down shift the oil could be thrown all over the cylinders and would be too much for the rings to handle, resulting in a prolonged puff of smoke. If this is the case, don't worry. Additionally this oil spray might have found it's way past the baffles and into the PCV tube and be sucked into the intake. Again resulting in smoke. datsun dreamer
I was thinking the same thing...The engine when i bought the truck had about 65k..I would guess now it's close to 80k...I will check the plugs shortly to see whats going on. Quote Link to comment
datsun dreamer
Hey mike..Thats exactly what my friend said, took the truck for a run and didn't downshift just braked and didn't see or notice anything! Quote Link to comment
datsun dreamer
Alright guys, Just checked 2 plugs and their a little charcoil looking not oily or black, I'll have the compression checked to be safe and find out where the oil leak is coming from...It looks like the pan, top end is clean. ]2eDeYe
You may want to check the other 2 for a more complete idea whats going on in there ;) Quote Link to comment
datsun dreamer
I checked the other 2 and there all the same...Just charcoil looking not black or oily......But she is gonna need a tupe-up soon! Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
I believe the "charcoal" color is ok. Not any signs of heavy wear. The chiltons & haynes manuals usualy have pics of plugs & the different colors so that may help you too. Its too close to LB,,,we need your 620 there :D Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Over filling the oil can aggravate this too. A racing engine can eliminate this by extending the pan lower (if possible) or by welding baffles to prevent the oil from moving forward, or in any direction and a windage tray can be bolted to the main bearing caps to provide a shield to prevent oil from splashing directly on the spinning crank. The ultimate way is to have a dry sump set up. Oil is continuously pumped out of the pan, or scavenged, and sent to a separate container elsewhere. Another pump supplies the motor. This keeps a minimal amount in the oil pan and away from the crankshaft. Quote Link to comment
datsun dreamer
It started to freak me out when i noticed it....But i think everything is o.k., I'll definately be there for longbeach....Hopefully take care of the oil leak by then and do the front drums as well.
