sdsurf
What is the closest color you have found to the engine color (blue) from 1972? Edited April 15, 2009 by sdsurf Quote Link to comment

Colbino
I just received my paint from Datsunparts.com which they claim was matched from an nos part that was stored away in some basement out of uv rays in it original packaging and what not. Anyway, it's not even close to that blue posted above. Sure, all monitors are calibrated differently but that looks like a ford blue, or the blue that you would find on the air cleaners of Datsun's other then the block color blue. I haven't painted my block yet, but I can tell you it is more of a dark teal-ish blue than that baby-ish blue. Quote Link to comment
sdsurf
yep... from Skibs build page i think its a GM blue, its engine block paint. closest match iv found to the stock datto blue without having to special order it. Quote Link to comment
hang_510
... but that looks like a ford blue... cant see the pix, but thats the most common block color. Quote Link to comment
72240z
cant see the pix, but thats the most common block color. Anyone know why? I always wondered why blue and not some more neutral color. Quote Link to comment
Skib
The Blue I used is a little bit brighter than the stock but its fairly close IMO. Iv painted all my blocks with the same blue and sitting in the bay it looks close enough to stock that Iv had people ask where I got the Datsun blue. Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
That photo is Datsun engine "Turquois" (about the same color as Kangaroo Bag Blue). The formula is: - 806J HS BLACK 177.2 - 801J HS WHITE 290.0 - 828J HS FAST BLUE 373.8 - 830J HS FAST GREEN 444.4 - 702OG BINDER 844.0 - 7030G BALANCER 960.4 It is close to Ford blue or Mopar blue, but not the same Quote Link to comment

Are you following the directions on the can? If you wait over so many hrs it says you have to wait like 7 days to apply another coat. This is ofcourse from memory, but that might be your problem... Weaver
^That's probably the problem. Some paints have the second coat window at about 10 minutes, others may be a few hours. Quote Link to comment
datto510
Ford Blue... FYI Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
i tried 2nd coating in the window. and still no such luck. and am a lil afraid to try after 7 days, all that work would be trashed. for the most part its a perfect first coat but there is always touch ups needing to be done. and it seems only right to put a clear coat on but just wont hold. I would read the directions on the can before you try painting it again. I dont have a can handy, but i have cleared w/ the high temp stuff with no problems... Quote Link to comment
Apollo77
a quick question, did you guys all do your clear in the first hour window? or did you wait for the 7 days? DV Quote Link to comment
sanitys
a quick question, did you guys all do your clear in the first hour window? or did you wait for the 7 days?DV ive done first hour. I know its not a picture of an engine, but i had to make a mask for one of my classes, mask is fiberglass and lots of fiber filler. Paints were that anodizing 2 stage stuff, so silver base, green "candy", added a touch of black in areas, then cleared. All done within an hour. Oh and its all high temp stuff. Skib
a quick question, did you guys all do your clear in the first hour window? or did you wait for the 7 days?DV Iv never used any clear coats on engine paint, altho in the the years of using spraypaint as a medium Iv found that some paints and clears dont like to work together. something in the chemical differences or if the surface is contaminated it will wrinkle almost immediately and as it drys. I try to stick with same brand paints and clears if Im using them together. Quote Link to comment
72240z
Why would you clear high temp engine enamel? Quote Link to comment
