Have truck high enough to work under and be able to drop tranny down and remove from under. Can't be too high. Block wheels and use supports.

Unbolt the primary driveshaft 4 nuts and bolts, at transfer case and remove.

Drain tranny oil or it WILL get messy.

Disconnect battery (do it!)

Unplug and remove wiring and unscrew speedo cable, support out of way.

Remove exhaust pipe support and torque stabilizer at rear of tranny (looks like mini shock absorber) '80s may not have it.

Remove tranny mount, 2 bolts under tail stock.

Remove tranny mount support, 2 bolts on each side at frame, 17mm.

Unbolt starter, 2 bolts and move forward out of way. This is where it welds itself to the oil filter if you didn't undo the battery!

Unbolt slave cylinder 2 bolts, and support out of way. (don't loose push rod)

Unbolt 4? 14mm engine bolts. don't forget the other two small ones at bottom front of tranny to the metal cover plate.

Some engines have metal gussets bolted to the rear sides of the block and extending down to bolt to the tranny bell for extra support.

Remove shifter by removing 'C' clip in shifter pin, slid pin out and lift shifter out with rubber boots.

Remove consul and unscrew sheet metal cover plate over shifter hole on trans tunnel to expose larger opening for more room to tilt tranny up for clearance.

To remove, wiggle tranny up and down to split from motor and move to the rear while lifting the back of the tranny up onto the torsion bar support cross member. Tranny must move back about 6" for the input shaft to disengage the clutch disc and pressure plate. Tilt front down and out, shifter will tilt up through the now larger shift hole.

I did this on an '83 4X4 last Tuesday and it was still a bitch to do. I ended up unbolting the pressure plate and letting it drop out of the way so the front of the tranny had room to drop forward and down.
