I picked this little devil about a month and a half ago. I've always wanted one for several reasons. First, my mom had several of these when we were young (we had nothing but datsuns and fords for as long as I could remember) and it brings back pleasant memories. Second, it's a Datsun. Third, just look at those lines...i think they're beautiful. It currently has the original drive-terrain and suspension. Had to drive it from Salinas to Modesto without rear brakes. I had my cousin drive in front of me so in case I hit someone, it was going to be someone I know. The car runs like a champ. I was surprised how good on gas these engines are. The gas gauge needle hardly moved on the way home. The car has 3 rust spots that I know of. I'm going to patch them up and go from there. Haven't really done much to it other than in the process of changing out the rear wheel cylinders. First only the rear right leaked. Once that one got fixed the rear left decided to let go, too. The seats are shot. I plan on maybe reupholster them or unless I come across a real nice set of small seats. I need to get all but the passenger door panels. Also, planning on changing out the carpet and add sound deadening pads to keep things quiet inside. The paint is original and the body is fairly straight. I buffed it out because it was so faded out. Nice thing about small cars is that tasks like these go quick. My plan is to only do the upgrades I feel the car needs. I plan on doing the brakes, lower it a bit, refurbish the suspension, steering and a 5 speed. Hope you guys like it and please chime in about anything and at any moment. Pics the PO sent me. The wheels were not included, unfortunately. The only decent door panel. The engine bay isn't too bad. Trunk is good, as well. Paint was dull from it sitting outside for a while. Pic is not real good since there is no sun light. You can sort of tell the difference in the paint on some of these. Funny that the PO told me that the car had no leaks anywhere in the brake system. He told me that it was normal for the brake fluid to "evaporate or disappear". proof that the rear left wheel cylinder was not leaking when the rear right was.

You're right, Mike. I don't want to spend much money nor get too complicated with modifications. With the new pump and bearings I should be ok as far as oil pressure and flow. I got the oil pump and some head lights that I was told was offered by Nissan Motor Sports for the 240z and Roadsters. I didn't want to spend too much on LED headlights so I thought these Hella H4's would be a good upgrade. They're supposed to be a straight swap. but we'll see.

I bought a new OEM pump for $60 on Ebay. I always crank the engine until I have some oil pressure as you've suggested ;). Hope there are not any other issues or surprises with this engine. Thank you guys for your comments and advice. I'll keep posting as it happens.

I'll get emery cloth and clean the journals. The engine sat in the car since the early 2000's, I believe. Also, going to hone the cylinders. I don't want to spend any more money than I have to on this engine for a bore and larger pistons. I have too many projects and can't afford to spend too much on an engine like this one. I'm already at about 300 on seals, bearings, rings, gaskets and such. That doesn't including what I will pay for the motor itself and the machine shop work on the head. Would you guys buy a new oil pump or just run the original?

So I started to take the engine apart and see what I'm dealing with internally. Unfortunately since the engine didn't get the oil changes it needed, I will rebuild it for peace of mind. Made sure the head had the oval intake ports. Also, the mystery of the bent push rod was solved. Looks like a valve seat came loose. I'll have to take it in and get all the valve seat squared away with the machine shop. While the head is there, I'll have them clean and resurface the head and check valve leak by. You can see above on piston #4 where the it made contact with the intake valve. Cylinder #3. It could be moisture from the engine just sitting there but the head gasket could have been bad, too. Who knows and who cares.

Those are cool. What scale are they? What "platform" (not sure what you call it) is it on?

    Another differential thread

You can still get the diff cover gasket from a Subaru R160. Same with the three other oil seals. For the Subaru LSD's I just get the correct gear oil from Subaru.

Thanks DF. Very helpful as always!

Thanks DF. When you say fresh head do you mean you changed valve seals, guides and such? How much is an A14 long block in this condition worth? We have no idea what a fair price would be.

Took a cap off a main and rod. What are your thoughts on these bearings? To me it looks like normal wear and tear. You guys think the bottom end is ok to run for a while longer? Currently my plan is to replace all seals, push rods, take the head in for a resurface and check the valves.

Got the motor home and started taking it apart. Took the valve cover and oil pan off. The rockers are caked, the oil pan had quite a bit of sludge settled on the bottom, there was a bent push rod and some coolant dripping out of one of the bolts for the mains.

My cousin got a '78 210GX parts car about a year ago. I helped him take out the engine and trans. It came with the 78hp A14 and the A63 dogleg trans. Being that it was the 78hp engine, I decided to "buy it" from him. I put buy it in parenthesis because I don't know how much these motors go for.

    Wilwood Powerlite Calipers

On one of my cars I have them on the front and rear. I believe they are in the piston sizes you've mentioned. I can go back and look at the specs if you need me to.

I run them on two of my cars. They are awesome. Only that I run them with a 12.2" rotor and only 15" and larger aftermarket rims fit over my setup. The 15" JDM wheels with a two piece barrel fit do not fit. I would think that if you run a smaller (11" or less) or stock rotor, the 15" JDM wheels would fit.

Does anybody have good pics of front sway bar on 510?

Glad you got it figured out.

    '75 620 make over

I have decided to start the painting process on my 620. By no means do I intend for the truck to be a show truck or a Sunday driver. It is a truck after all!! My plans are getting it painted, new wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, 5spd off of a 280zx, 2.25" exhaust and change the interior a little. The truck will see some hauling and an 80mile commute to work at least once a week. I have decided to paint the truck an off white with about 4 coats of clear. Here are some pics... ahhhh wait...how do you post pics straight from my hard drive??

That's a sweet truck. I remember seeing it here on the forum a while back. I got the tires today. I'll see if I could get them mounted this week end. I hope I didn't just waste $450 on tires that don't fit or work. LOL I'll post pictures once all the work is done.

    '75 620 make over

Bringing this back because it's not done...anymore. I've had this truck pretty much untouched since 2012 when I freshened it up. I don't drive it much at all. Maybe 1000 miles (700 mile round trip to the 2012 JCCS) since it was finished. Now I want to change the stance. I'm sick of it. I want to go to a Prerunner look. The plan is to keep the rims and add some 215/70r/16 A/T tires, take the 3" blocks off the rear, raise the front and change the rear diff to help with the bigger wheels. Nothing major or expensive. I have too many projects going on at once and at times I feel overwhelmed. I need your input, guidance and comments. I've never put this size tires on a 620 and I'm not sure if they fit or rub. What's the highest the front will go by just the torsion bars? The truck below is similar to the stance I'm looking for. The truck below is newer so it has ball joint vs. my kingpin. That truck was supposedly built for some type of competition. I'm not sure if they did some fab work up front, but I can't tell from the pick in the site https://www.grautogallery.com/vehicles/2020/1978-Datsun-620-Baja To me it looks pretty much stock, but I'm not familiar with the ball joint 620s. How is sits today.

I used the 3/4" seal. Not sure if it leaks, though. I haven't washed the car since my trunk seal leaks real bad.

A few weeks back I ran a compression check, just out of curiosity. The numbers dropped a bit from cylinder #1, on down. I believe I'm still within 15% of each other. Are the numbers low? Motor doesn't seem to be burning oil or smoking. For the most part, the motor pulls fine and keeps temps well in check. In order:

Those doors look sooooo much better! Not sure if I'll be able to work on my car this week, but it's definitely on my to-do list. I'll try and get to the console soon and see if I run into any issues. Thanks for your help!

I bought them on ebay, all the way from Thailand. According to the seller, they are a copy from a JDM KB110. Not sure if he's b.s'ing, but I like the design and the vinyl looks and feels like good quality. I found one like it in the Datsun 1200 web page. It says it's a KB110 GX. http://datsun1200.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=12459 I will look into blacking out the bottom of the door. Now that you pointed it out, it does look funky with the two-tone. I never though of using Velcro...I love the idea. I hate drilling into cars, even if you can't see it. The console did come with brackets, but I rather use Velcro. Thanks for your ideas and input!
