  1. I guess the real question is where are you seeing this flutter.... Is it the center of the hood fluttering like a sail... Or side to side because the bumpers are worn..... I always thought the front lock was pretty fixed where it was, with no adjustment..
  2. Did you post this somewhere else.... I swear you mentioned something about the skin and the frame work being unbonded..
  3. I think i know what you mean.... The skin vs frame. That makes sense My hood was like that.... I was told to use seam sealer.... Mine was all dryed and breaking apart.... I think I have a pic some where.....
  4. Trust me when I say putting the hood on was a little sketchy..... Me holding, wife stabilizing with a 5 year old putting the bolts in.... Wish I had a pic of that.... They seem a little more excited about the project now because it actually runs and drives and resembles a truck again.. It helps keep the momentum up....
  5. He actually does help, in his own way... he wouldn't give up the dynamat rollers unless I let him help... He steals my tools quite often... I try to include him when ever I can, I even have to get the wife to help. Pretty sad when you have to use your wife and 5 year old to put the hood on or bleed the brakes... But in the end it's more fun with the family involved...
  6. Not sure how much, if at all, the size of the battery effects your problem, I think like you said it's really only to start the car.. Maybe try a bigger battery to rule it out but I'm not convinced that's your problem. I still think you drawing to much with the lights.... Switches and gauges are a minimal draw.... How much are the lights suppose to use? I compare this to my daily drive (chevy)... It had a 100amp altenator... I have a pretty loud stereo system in it.... 75% volume I could watch my voltage drop with the bass... When it finally died they offered me one for a truck with a plow package which was 140 amps.... Now I can turn my stereo up to 100% without a flicker of the gauge.... So either you alternator is not putting out 100% anymore or those lights require a lot more power.... Check the directions it should list it's power needs... Then probably have the alternator tested? Also have you configured the lights different from what they intended, like being able to have high and low on at the same time....?
  7. Well got the first round of dynamat done... With some help.... So i used the good stuff for the roof and back panel which will be visable.. the Floors got the rest in strategic places and is getting a second layer of soundproofing, full coverage... Started with the trans tunnel... rest to follow.... Stopped and pulled my new carpet out of the box before I continued.... I want to make sure the carpet covers the soundproofing..... And last... after I repaint the cab I'll install my dynamat headliner, had to do it in 3 pieces but should look good.... .... That's it for today.....
  8. That's a good point, never thought of that.. might be better to change the locks.... I could see some asshole keeping the keys and waiting to see it running....Don't take the chance.... Take the loss, fix the problem, keep ypur datsun and move on..... You could always change the keyed ignition to the push to start system too...
  9. I guess it's good it wasn't running or it might have been stolen.... they probably took the key or tossed on the ground pissed they couldn't steal it..... May sound stupid but check the ground or even the bushes or something near by.... And I think your right about other datsun keys working.. I think i used an old Toyota key even when I first got my 521. maybe check with a local locksmith, to see if they can match a key to the ignition.... Goodluck....
  10. Pics Always help.... the timing tensioner is just as it sounds.... spring loaded and keeps tension on the chain... If the chain became too lose the tensioner could pop out because it extends too far.... it located Inside timing cover...
  11. I think the wood icehouse is hauling is longer than the truck.....
  12. Well i guess stroffgren types faster than me....
  13. Sorry to say but the only way to be certain is to pull the timing cover.... Your friend may have an issue with the tensioner? Or something... Could the tensioner have popped out Because the cam chain was extremely worn? I don't know how tight super tight is... Maybe pop the sprocket, since you have the wood wedge in place and see if you can get the sprocket and chain back on without problems... If so continue on.... if not you ll wanna pull the timing cover and dig deeper, if your gut is telling you something may be wrong I would listen... better safe then sorry and doing things multiple times....
  14. A relay is only a switch, it will not help with the amount of current the headlights use.. But it is good to use if you have a larger current draw then the factory switch intended. Then you don't burn up the switch or blow fuses.... How many amps is your alternator? Is it an upgrade? I am pretty sure my stock 521 alternator only produces 30amps... So if you have upgraded lights, a stereo or a combination of anything else you may need a higher amp output alternator to take care of the current drop....
  15. You'll find them to best one of the best prices and selling complete kits... Becarefull trying to find a deal because some are very misrepresented, especially places on ebay and even amazon....
  16. Don't forget those 2 bolts going up into the head....
  17. Personally I'd build this back as a stock motor and learn how it's done.... Then you swap that into your truck, now you build you matching numbers motor.. Unless your thinking of a frankenmotor or something crazy... .. if thats the case i would keep your numbers motor safe and mod the one you bought...
  18. I saw some extra pics.... Ya these motors will run regardless.... but he pulled the head and it's pretty crusty inside. He could probably blow it apart clean the carbon and reassemble and it will run fine.... Still for 200 and everything he got with it, spare parts are always good....
  19. Just takes time an patience.....
  20. Nice job.... I just did the exact same thing, oil pan leak was driving me crazy...
  21. The biggest thing is I can keep moving forward , even without the paint.... Still plenty of prep work.... the whole cab needs a quick 600 grit sand.... plus the fenders and doors need to get finished and ready for paint too so no resting here.
  22. Haha. No skin flutes... ( if i make any other comment my wife will slap me) The more I put things back together the more I figure out I am missing so many original pieces... someone was definately snagging parts off it before i bought it. even those vent levers.... I never expected to find those .... And I am trying to stop my self from going ocd on the body work.. this won't be a show truck or trailer queen.. I welded up holes but I am not straightening every panel... it's a 40+ year old truck, trucks have dents and plus i seem to have better luck not crashing a vehicle that already has dents....
  23. Well technically paint and assemble and some final wiring... .. It runs and drives and stops, but far from street legal..... My luck I'll probably finish it the week of the biggest winter snow storm... Still thinking a realistic time to be done is for spring... trying not to rush the end..... once paint is done it should go together fairly quickly.... I expect the little shit to slow me down....i try to plan ahead but doesn't always work out.... Damn you stroffgren now all I see is a trumpet.... I guess I'll have to do air horns to match the button
  24. I don't know if this will help or not but do you have the towers in the same location as before? Stroffgren has you pointed in the right direction..... you want those towers perfect..... My old head suffered damage to the tower and cam because previous owner didn't install properly.... it's worth taking the time to make sure this is right....
  25. Also got some little goodies.... New brake adjuster boots... And these..... Also got some switches on the way for my ignition system and accessories Plus a horn button... I have no parts at all to make something work in the steering wheel.... And this for a start button....
